The most beloved garment in history is also one of the most water-intensive things a human being can own. Here's what that actually means - and what we're doing about it.

You've probably owned dozens of pairs of jeans in your lifetime. They feel timeless. Reliable. Almost neutral. But behind every single pair is a supply chain that stretches across continents, draws from some of the world's most water-stressed regions, and leaves a footprint that is anything but neutral.

Denim is the world's most produced fabric. Over 1.24 billion pairs of jeans are sold globally every year. Nearly every person on Earth owns at least one pair. And yet the true cost of producing them - in water, in pollution, in waste - rarely appears on any price tag.

The number that stops most people: 3,781 litres of water to produce a single pair of jeans. That figure, cited by the United Nations, covers cotton cultivation through to the finished garment on a store shelf. To put it another way - it is roughly the amount of water an average person drinks over ten years. And cotton is predominantly grown in water-scarce regions: Pakistan, India, China, parts of Central Asia - places where rivers and aquifers are already under severe stress.

Water is only part of the story. The dyeing and finishing of denim - giving jeans their colour, their fade, their feel - is among the most chemically intensive processes in all of manufacturing. Textile dyeing accounts for roughly 20% of global industrial water pollution. The indigo that turns raw denim blue doesn't disappear. It flows into rivers. It enters communities. It travels.

Then comes the end of life. The fashion industry generates approximately 92 million tonnes of textile waste every year. Of all the clothes ever collected for recycling, less than 1% are actually recycled back into new garments. The rest is landfilled, incinerated, or exported to already overburdened communities. Denim alone generates 2.16 million tonnes of waste annually. The jeans we discard don't disappear. They just become someone else's problem, somewhere less visible.

Extending the life of a pair of jeans by just nine months - through repair, rewear, or passing them on - reduces their carbon, water, and waste footprint by 20 to 30%. The most sustainable pair of jeans is almost always the one that already exists.

Every piece represents water that wasn't spent, emissions that weren't released, and waste that didn't reach a landfill. But it also represents something harder to quantify: a different relationship with clothing altogether. One built on intention rather than impulse. On craft rather than volume.

Denim has a long history of being repaired, patched, and passed down. Before fast fashion made clothes disposable, jeans were mended and worn until they genuinely couldn't be worn anymore. We're not inventing something new. We're returning to something older and wiser - and making it worth wanting again.
