There is a plant growing right now, somewhere in a forest in China or India or Ethiopia, at a speed that seems almost impossible. Up to a metre a day. No irrigation. No pesticides. Bamboo grows entirely on rainfall. No irrigation, no synthetic fertilisers, no agricultural runoff. Its root system - which stays intact after harvesting - actively prevents soil erosion and returns moisture to groundwater. When you harvest bamboo, you don't clear a field. You trigger regrowth.

On carbon, the numbers are striking. Research from Moso bamboo plantations in China found sequestration rates up to 33% higher than tropical mountain rainforests. A well-managed hectare can absorb the annual emissions of three to four cars - and hits that capacity within a few years of planting, not decades.
